I've read a book for the school and it has liked to me a lot. I think (like you) that the first chapter is so innecessary, but it's just for enter the reader in the book...
My favourite moment is when Philip reads the letter from Ambrose when he is already dead. I think it's the best part...

I read this ages ago. I recollect liking it, but all the details have faded from memory. I really do need to reread it! If you are looking for another suggestion for 'questionable heroines' you have to try Wilkie Collins's Armadale. It's wonderful!!! I'm contemplating reading Lady Audley's Secret when I'm done!
