I couldn't agree more! After reading this book on your recommendation, I went up in the attic, grabbed my Complete Jane Austen, and settled in to reinforce my own Jane Austen education.

I've always been an advocate of the her books, but I found them even more rewarding after becoming attuned to Deresiewicz's wonderful interpretations of the novels.

A nice review. Having read this book myself, I can appreciate your view, although I find that it is somewhat more hypnotic, disturbing and entrancing than you have outlined. I certainly agree about M's relationshop with the tiger, and your parting comment of him being the only one who is actually able to hunt it; he has some instincts that are born of his own upbringing and the beast he seems to become when he hunts. Yet at the same time, particularly in the beginning, he is cold, machine-like, calculating. And you mentioned a change in character - yes, to a certain extent, but his cold counternance seems to be a facade or anonymity behind which to hide, and his associations with the family hurt him as he begins to become a more positive and friendly character so much that he withdraws again ntil he has regressed to such a point as to contemplate muder. So has he really changed?

Anyway, I agree with nearly everything you have written, thanks for the review and different opinions and perspective.

I stand by my Nook! I just purchased Room and The Finkler Question for my trip to FL and it only set me back $16.99. I love the feel and, most of all, the smell of an actual book, but you can't beat the e-reader for convenience.

It makes me happy to know you're still fighting the fight, though. I feel slightly less guilty for switching over to the dark side. Icecaps can melt and birds can fall out of the sky, but I think you getting an e-reader would more seriously suggest the coming apocalypse.

I have fought against getting an e-reader but have finally given in and am getting a Kindle for Christmas. Its sitting in a cupboard somewhere all wrapped up. I've already downloaded some books thouggh, and am enjoying using Amazon's PC Kindle app to have a look at them. Nice post

I liked your analysis. You provide some good contrast & comparisons between the novel & the movie.

However, the only part I feel miffed by is that you leave no ambiguity for the fact that Hannah never the "order/report" that she uncannily admitted in the trial.

Thus, it seems like your automatically assume she is "monstrous" since she was the main person responsible for killing 300 lives in the church.

My questions are this:
- If we assume that she didn't write that "order/report," doesn't she deserve more sympathy?

- Going along that previous assumption, why did she admit to something she didn't do? Was it because she was more terrified she didn't want anyone to know of her illiteracy? If so, what does this say about Hannah? Was it her vanity that got the best out of her?
