Short Story Wednesday: Roman Fever by Edith Wharton

This is one of my favorite short stories. Two old friends converse blithely as they look out over the Palatine in Rome. As the story evolves, it becomes clear that they're not merely friends but rivals. When I taught this story to my high school students, they were appalled and surprised by the ending. As I would ask them, who's the real villain in the story?

  1. Oh well, Mrs. Slade turned herself in a villain! I loved this story as well.
